Grows best in sandy, coarse-grained or other fast draining soil. Prefers sun in coastal sites, and part shade in inland sites. Selected for the garden by John Dourley at Rancho santa Ana Botanical Garden and introduced in 1979. parents are thought to be C. papillosus and C. thyrsiflorus.
