Grows best in sandy, coarse-grained or other fast draining soil. Prefers sun in coastal sites, and part shade in inland sites. Selected by Nevin smith in 1976 from Mount Hood in sonoma Co., and introduced by Leonard Coates Nurseries in 1978.
