California thistle (Cirsium occidentale var. californicum), also known as cobweb thistle, is a biennial native to much of California and the western United States. In its first year, it forms a rosette of gray-green spiny leaves. In its second year, it sends up multibranched stems topped with clusters of lavender-pink to maroon-red flowers. The bracts are covered in distinctive cobwebby hairs, giving the plant its common name.
This variety is not invasive or weedy like some non-native thistles and is a great choice for wildlife gardens. It’s drought tolerant and does not require summer water once established. California thistle is a valuable nectar source, attracting native bees, bumble bees, and butterflies. It can be grown easily from seed without any special treatment.
