Horticultural selection from Penstemon spectabilis. A variation of the gorgeous Penstemon spectabilis, or showy penstemon, P. Spectabilis 'Snow Dragon' is a rare beauty, flaunting petals of sparkling white instead of the sunset violet-blue of the species. 'Snow Dragon' also tends to grow more vigorously and have a fuller, bushier form than showy penstemon. The pure white blooms are abundant in spring and summer about April through June, contrasting nicely against the luxuriant green foliage. This perennial native plant grows to be about 3 feet high and wide, a nice addition to the back of a flowerbed or tucked into a rock garden. Penstemons tend to grow naturally in dry, rocky, well-draining places, often found basking in full sun on gravelly hill sides. Penstemon 'Snow Dragon' may tolerate a little shade, but produces the most flowers when given full sun. Fast growing and hardy, once established this flowering native needs supplemental water about once a month.
