White chaparral currant (Ribes malvaceum 'Rana White') is a distinctive form of currant that features pure white flowers instead of the usual pink, creating a striking contrast against its true green, aromatic foliage. It grows into an upright shrub reaching 6 feet or more tall and wide. In winter and early spring, short, pendant clusters of fragrant white flowers attract hummingbirds and other pollinators, followed by sticky berries enjoyed by birds. Extremely drought-adapted once established, it may drop its leaves in late summer and leaf out again in late fall, though with moderate watering it can remain nearly evergreen. Plant in full sun to light shade. Native to chaparral and woodland edges across much of California. Introduced by Rana Nursery.
