Chuparosa  (Justicia californica)  is a beautiful, multi-stemmed shrub with many red flowers. The plant is usually leafless while in bloom. Chuparosa grows fast to 6 feet high and 6 feet wide and is somewhat sprawling. This is a low bush which grows in dry, hot regions in the sand or rocky terrain of the desert floor For a short time it bears succulent green leaves that are smaller than the eventual tubular flowers.  The flowers are shades of bright to deep red, or sometimes yellow and appear in late winter into summer, making the bush a blaze of color.  

This desert plant likes full sun and well-draining, rocky, gravelly or sandy soil.  It  is drought-tolerant and can be cut back in fall to refresh its growth.

Its common names include hummingbird bush because hummingbirds love to feed upon the flower’s nectar.  Chuparosa, another of its names, is Spanish for hummingbird.

Koeberlinia spinosa is a species of flowering plant native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico known by several common names, including Crown of Thorns, Allthorn, and Crucifixion Thorn. It is the sole species of the monotypic genus Koeberlinia, which is sometimes considered to be the only genus in the plant family Koeberliniaceae. Alternately it is treated as a member of the caper family. This is a shrub of moderate to large size, sprawling to maximum heights over 4 meter (13 feet). It is entirely green while growing and is made up of tangling straight stems which branch many times. The tip of each rigid stem branch tapers into a long, sharp spine. Leaves are mainly rudimentary, taking the form of tiny deciduous scales. Most of the photosynthesis occurs in the green stem branches. The shrub blooms abundantly in white to greenish-white flowers. The fruits are shiny black berries each a few millimeters long; they are attractive to birds.

Krameria bicolor is a perennial shrub or subshrub of the family Krameriaceae, the Rhatanies. It is commonly known as white rhatany, crimson-beak, and chacate in Spanish (cosahui in the state of Sonora). It is found in drier environments of the southwestern United States from California to Texas, and in northern Mexico. It is a low lying, densely branched shrub, commonly up to 2 feet (1 m), but exceptionally to beyond 5. 0 feet (2 m). The branches are spiny in form but not sharp nor firm at the tips. The leaves are grey-green to greenish, finely-haired, narrow and only one half to three quarters of an inch long.

Krameria erecta is a species of rhatany known by several common names, including Pima rhatany, purple heather, and littleleaf rhatany. It is native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, where it grows in dry areas such as desert flats and chaparral slopes. This is a small, tangled shrub under a meter in height with blunt, thorny branches covered in silky hairs and fuzzy linear leaves. The shrub flowers in the spring and again in the fall during wetter years. The showy flower has four or five bright pink cup-shaped sepals and usually five smaller, triangular petals which are pink with green bases. The three upper petals are held erect and the lower two are glandular structures next to the ovary. Next to these are four curving stamens. The fruit is a furry heart-shaped body covered in pink spines. It reproduces by seed. This species and others in its genus are root parasites, tapping the tissues of nearby plants for nutrients, especially water. This helps it survive in soil that is almost totally dry.

Krascheninnikovia lanata is a species of flowering plant in the amaranth family known by the common name winter fat. It is native to much of western North America from central Canada to northern Mexico, where it grows in a number of habitats. This is a small shrub sending erect stem branches to heights between one half and one meter. It produces flat lance-shaped leaves up to 3 centimeters long. The stems and foliage are covered in woolly white hairs which age to a reddish color. The tops of the stem branches are occupied by plentiful spike flower clusters. The shrub is generally monoecious, with each upright flower cluster holding mostly staminate flowers with a few pistillate flowers clustered near the bottom. The staminate flowers have large, woolly leaflike leafs. The pistillate flowers have smaller leafs and develop tiny white fruits. The silky hairs on the fruits allow for wind dispersal. This species is an important winter forage for grazing domestic and wild animals. It thrives in salty soils such as those on alkali flats. The plants are very long-lived. They are sometimes cultivated.

Langloisia setosissima (bristly langloisia, bristly-calico, Great Basin langloisia or lilac sunbonnets) is a flowering plant, the sole species in the genus Langloisia in the family Polemoniaceae. It is native to the western United States, where it is found in desert washes and on rocky slopes and plains from eastern Oregon and Idaho south to eastern California and Arizona. It is an annual plant, growing to 4-20 cm tall. The leaves are spirally arranged, linear, 2-3 cm long, densely bristly and with a toothed margin. It is endemic to California, where it is known only from a few locales in the Little San Bernardino Mountains and the adjacent Palm Springs area in the northern end of the Coachella Valley. The largest populations, which may contain thousands of individuals, are located within the bounds of Joshua Tree National Park. This is a very small annual herb no more than three centimeters high. The tiny, hairy stem branches to form small matted clusters on the sand surface. The hairy leaves are just a few millimeters long and unlobed. The inflorescence is a dense cluster of flowers each only 2 to 5 millimeters wide. The flower corolla has curled-back lobes which are white, sometimes with a spot of purple or pink. The protruding stamens are yellow. The main threat to this species is development in its range, and it is also vulnerable to off-road vehicle damage in the wide open sandy flats where it grows.

Linanthus parryae is a species of flowering plant in the phlox family known by the common name sandblossoms. It is endemic to California, where it is known from sandy, open habitat types in several regions from the Central Valley to the Sierra Nevada foothills to the Mojave Desert.
