Red fairyduster (Calliandra california) is an evergreen, woody shrub, native to Baja California. It gets about 3 ft tall and 5 ft wide over time, forming an open, branching mound. The flowers, which appear in early summer, have clusters of red stamens. It can survive on very little water once established, however, additional watering will encourage it to bloom through summer and again in the fall. Native to sandy washes, flats, and hillsides; cold tolerant to temperatures of 22 degrees F. Attracts hummingbirds.
