Mimulus 'Sunshine' is thought to be a natural hybrid of Mimulus aurantiacus and was selected for its abundant, large yellow blooms and vigorous growth habit. The cheerful flowers contrast beautifully against the monkeyflower's rich green foliage. 'Sunshine' monkeyflower grows in a low mounding, compact form about 1-2 feet in height. The sunny yellow flowers brighten up borders and rock gardens, flowering almost year round in a coastal setting. Inland the flowering season is not quite so long. We recommend trimming and pinching back to maintain shape and maximize flowering. This plant is suitable for containers as well as flower borders, pathways, hummingbird and butterfly habitats, and will do well in full sun or part shade. Mimulus bigelovii is a species in the Phrymaceae (Lopseed) family known by the common name Bigelow's monkeyflower. It is native to the southwestern United States, where it grows in desert and slope habitat. This is a hairy annual herb producing an erect stem 2 to 25 centimeters tall. The plant is variable in size and shape as well as color, the herbage being green to nearly red in color. The pointed oval or rounded leaves are each up to 3.5 centimeters long and arranged in opposite pairs about the stem. The tubular base of the flower is surrounded by a reddish-green or purple ribbed calyx of hairy sepals with long lobe tips. The trumpet-shaped flower corolla is roughly one to two centimeters long and has a very narrow tube and a wide mouth. The corolla has two upper lobes and three lower, and is generally magenta or deep pink in color with darker red, purple, and yellow spots in the throat. This plant is seldom seen in the garden but is common in desert canyons in spring of good rainfall years.

It is native to the chaparral and oak woodlands in much of California, southern Oregon, and parts of Arizona. It is an annual herb growing to a maximum height of 30 centimeters with a slender green or purplish stem which sometimes has thin branches. The threadlike, curling leaves may be up to 4 centimeters long but are under a millimeter wide. The small flower has five white petals each a few millimeters long and smaller, ribbed sepals.

California Four O'Clock (Mirabilis laevis var. crassifolia) is a common native perennial herb that grows in Southern and Central California, primarily in the Central Coast, the South Coast Range and South Coast regions. It tends to grow in grassy places, at elevations from 0-3300 feet. The plant form is dense and mounding, producing a large number of small brightly colored flowers ranging from pink to purple. The plant sometimes goes deciduous in the summer, leaving only winding white twigs until the next rainy season. It may retain some foliage in shady locations and with occasional summer water. It is a perennial herb growing upright to about 80 centimeters in maximum height. The leaves are oppositely arranged on the spreading stem branches. Each fleshy leaf has an oval or rounded blade up to 12 centimeters long and is hairless or sparsely hairy. The flowers occur in leaf axils on the upper branches. Usually six flowers bloom in a bell-shaped involucre of five partly fused leafs. Each five-lobed, funnel-shaped flower is 4 to 6 centimeters wide and magenta in color.
